Mpox Outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Largest Number of Cases in a Year
Since January 2023, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has reported the largest number of yearly suspected clade I mpox cases on record. The outbreak is more widespread than any previous outbreak, and the risk of mpox spreading to other countries is significant.
Symptoms and Treatment
Mpox is a viral infection that can cause fever, headache, muscle aches, and a rash. The rash can be painful and may develop into blisters. Most people recover from mpox within a few weeks, but the infection can be serious and even fatal in some cases.
